Waterbuck De-Snaring
October 2008

Waterbuck

When Daryl Tiran when for his early morning run on the Elephant Hills Golf Course, he was intending to beat the late October heat and get a good start on the day’s work ahead.  Mr. Tiran had no idea that he would find a female waterbuck stuck in a snare on the edge of the golf course....

Thanks to Daryl’s quick thinking to phone the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit, Roger Parry was able to drive to town and get his equipment while VFAPU organized with National Parks.  Shortly thereafter, Roger was able to use a pull syringe to immobilize the waterbuck.

Unfortunately, the snare was made from very thick cable wire and double wrapped around the waterbuck, making it impossible to cut through with the wire cutters. VFAPU and National Parks game scouts were able to work on the snare that was lodged around the waterbucks neck and get the knot out and remove the snare.  Nonetheless tissue and muscle damage had already been incurred when the waterbuck was thrashing around to get free of the snare.  Roger quickly dosed up the waterbuck with anti-biotics and cleaned the wound before reversing the immobilization drugs.

Due to the location of the snare being right on a waterhole Roger stayed with the Waterbuck for a short while to make sure she didn’t drop her head into the water and drown.  When it became clear she was becoming coherent, logs and rocks were used to keep her upright, and we all watched as she slowly came to and staggered off a short ways before sitting down to rest.

VFAPU and National Parks completed the effort with a snare sweep of the area removing all wire snares.
